Yes, SZA Dated Drake But She Clarifies One Important Misunderstanding With “Mr Right Now”

today7 October 2020

Background

Champagne Papi found himself in hot water following the release of 21 Savage’s new song with Metro Boomin titled, ‘Mr Right Now’. In the song, the 33-year-old Canadian rapper name drops Sza while spitting bars, rapping:

“Yeah, said she wanna **** to some SZA, wait cause I used to date SZA back in ’08,”

As a result, the Grammy award-nominated Sza (whose real name is Solána Imani Rowe) suddenly found herself under intense scrutiny on social media for a relationship that happened more than a decade ago. Was she mad about the name name-drop? Maybe. Eagle-eyed fans were quick to note that SZA unfollowed Drake on Instagram shortly after “Mr. Right Now”‘s October 2nd release. Fans speculated that the lyric involving her left her unhappy.

After all, there was an obvious problem with the lyric. Digging deeper, Sza (who turns 29 this year) would have been 17 in 2008. This would then mean that the lyric that Drake (who in 2008 was 22) used to confess that the two were dating, also alluded to the fact that he was dating a minor.

However, as Sza would have turned 18 after November 8th that year, it is also possible that she was of legal age when the two were in a relationship. And true enough, to answer all the buzz in the Twitterverse over the possibility of any inappropriate behaviour, Sza Tweeted:

And in Sza’s own words, this was “lifetimes ago”. Drake has since moved on, having dated A lists like Zoe Kravitz, Serena Williams, Tyra Banks and more. Just this year, Drake shared photos of his now almost-three-year-old son Adonis, who he shares with Sophie Brussaux.

Meanwhile, Sza is still riding high off the success of the surprise release of her new single ‘Hit Different’, alongside Ty Dolla $ign, with a music video that she directed by herself.
