When 43-year-old John Mayer finally decided to jump onto TikTok, he probably didn’t expect to be flooded with hate. Specifically, from Taylor Swift fans.

Mayer posted a TikTok on Monday, showing him struggling to flip the camera over while in the car.

Unfortunately, almost immediately, Mayer was dragged for :
• Joining TikTok
• Not knowing how to flip the camera
• Dating T-Swift when she was 19
Ngl, the comments are rather savage ?

For the uninitiated, Mayer and Swift were said to have dated briefly between 2009 and 2010. However, while neither has publically confirmed the relationship, Swifties have interpreted her song ‘Dear John’ from her 2010 album ‘Speak Now’ to be about the ‘Free Fallin” singer. The song isn’t exactly complimentary, being a scathing narrative about a relationship with an emotionally manipulative older man. The lyrics include:
“Dear John, I see it all now that you’re gone,
Don’t you think I was too young to be messed with?Dear John, I see it all, now it was wrong,
Don’t you think nineteen is too young”
Years later, Mayer would go on to tell Rolling Stone that the song “really humiliated” him. Saying he was caught off-guard by the song and called it “cheap songwriting”. He elaborated:
“It made me feel terrible. Because I didn’t deserve it. I’m pretty good at taking accountability now, and I never did anything to deserve that. It was a really lousy thing for her to do.”
However, Mayer hasn’t exactly been a paragon of relationships. Not only has he continued to shade T-Swift since (criticising her songwriting for ‘Lover’), his on-and-off-again ex-girlfriend Jessica Simpson has gone on to claim that the singer emotionally abused her in her memoir. She alleges that Mayer had broken up with her nine times – and every single time, over email.

Following the flood of T-Swift comments, Mayer posted a second video where he looks to be engaged in an imagined conversation with the person behind the camera. He is seen reluctantly nodding and attempting to speak, only to not be able to. He captioned the video, “POV: You’re berating me and I’m hearing you out.”

Obviously, that too came under a barrage of passive-aggressive comments from the fandom. But, whether or not the hate is necessary remains to be seen. After all, their alleged relationship happened over a decade ago, with Swift now having moved on way past the episode. Nevertheless, the fandoms support and love for her is heartwarming.
