You know the drill: you get hungry, whip out your phone, spend 20 minutes trying to decide what to eat, then wait another 40 minutes to get your meal – and after all that, sometimes, what you get is not what you ordered.
If you weren’t hungry, this would be a cinch: simply report the issue and hopefully, have the service provider revert with a solution. But, what would you do if, instead of the chicken you ordered, you receive…
A. Deep. Fried. Towel.
Well, that’s exactly what Alique Perez found herself asking. Perez, who had ordered the ‘Chickenjoy’ meal for her son from a Jollibee outlet in Metro Manila, took to social media to share her predicament. The 19-second video shows her poking at what looks like chicken on the outside, but upon closer inspection is actually a greenish hand towel.
As she explains in the video:
“Ordered chicken for my son, while I was trying to get him a bite, I found it super hard to even slice. Tried opening it up with my hands and to my surprise [it was] a deep-fried towel. This is really disturbing… How the h*** do you get the towel in the batter and even fry it?”
She went on to say that, despite having heard complaints about mixups from the fast-food chain, she had never believed it but “now I know that it really happens! So disgusting and embarrassing…”
Since sharing her post, it has accumulated almost 3 million views, with responses ranging from amusement to disgust.
“When you thought you hit the jackpot with the size of the chicken you got… But it’s a rag.. hehe”
“The mysterious question! What was it used to wipe/where was it marinated before it was fried?”
“The fact that the used towel is mixed in the batter then fried in the fryer means bacteria has already contaminated the other chickens that they sold,”
Responding to her post, the restaurant released a statement promising to retrain the employees at the store in question, in addition to launching an investigation into the incident. The statement reads:
“This concerns the customer complaint on food ordered late evening of June 1 from a franchised store in Bonifacio Global City. We are deeply concerned about this matter and have conducted a thorough investigation on the incident. It is unfortunate that deviations from Jollibee’s standard food preparation procedures occurred on the part of certain personnel of the store. As a result of this incident, we have directed the Jollibee Bonifacio – Stop Over branch to close for three days starting tomorrow, June 3, to thoroughly review its compliance with procedures and retrain its store team to ensure that this will not happen again. We will also send out reminders to all stores to ensure the strict adherence to Jollibee’s food preparation systems.”
Always check your food before leaving the store (if you’re taking away) and before consumption!
