Covid-19 Will Not Stop “Kingdom: Legendary War” From Turning Into A Global K-pop Festival!

today5 April 2021

Background

Seems like Covid-19 has wrecked many plans and is causing a ton of inconvenience but guess what, ‘Kingdom: Legendary War’ is not giving in!

Have you heard of Mnet’s female idol competition ‘Queendom’? If you enjoy that show, chances are you will enjoy Mnet’s ‘Kingdom: Legendary War’ as well as its male counterpart to the former!

Featuring six of Kpop’s popular boy bands such as BTOB, iKON, SF9, The Boyz, Stray Kids, and Ateez, The Boyz won the prequel competition which is called, ‘Road to Kingdom’ last year. This time around, though, ‘Kingdom: Legendary War’ will have no elimination. After votes are cast and counted, only the winner will be announced.

Hosts for this festival are Max Changmin and U-Know Yunho, both members of the pop-duo TVXQ.

The first trailer was released by Mnet earlier this year when they announced a global live broadcast, which is set to be aired on the 23rd of February this year, via Mnet’s YouTube channel.

“All the groups are already proficient artists with their own unique colors (styles), and dropping any of them seemed like nonsense,” said program producer Lee Young-joo during Thursday’s press conference. “As the title shows, all the groups are making legendary stages and we want each and every one of them to be introduced to the viewers.”

Having worked with artists for the channel’s annual Mnet Asian Music Awards since 2013, Lee went on to say, “although the stage is smaller than MAMA’s, the performances may be better.”

“‘Kingdom’ is a global project,” the program’s chief producer Park Chan-wook noted.

“K-pop is now being acknowledged as an independent genre at global music awards. But with the outbreak of COVID-19, artists aren’t able to go abroad or hold global tours. We’ve introduced the ‘global audience assessment’ so that K-pop fans worldwide could enjoy and get involved.”
