Back in their days, our parents had ‘The Twilight Zone.’ But what about us millennials? Well, we have ‘Black Mirror’ — a British dystopian science-fiction anthology that revolves around technology and how it can pretty much ruin our lives. Feeling uncomfortable yet?
Check out these top 3 episodes that will have you squirming in a matter of minutes.
1. Nosedive
You can’t go anywhere without being asked to rate the services you just engaged with, from online shopping to phone applications and e-hailing rides. Well, now. What if we kick it up another notch and start rating people? Yes, people like you and me. And the rates that we get (between 1 to 5 stars) affect our status in society. Individuals who rank 5 stars can go anywhere they please, while those ranking below 3 are severely ostracised and oppressed. Oh wait, isn’t this already kinda happening in today’s society?
And this episode is known to be the most light-hearted one from ‘Black Mirror’!
2. Arkangel
Parents can be rather protective of their children, and it’s for their own good! The world is too dangerous for kids to be running about with little to no supervision, so parents need to know where their children are and who they are with at all times. But how far is too far? In the technologically advanced world of ‘Black Mirror’, not only are parents able to locate and constantly monitor the health of their children, they can even censor anything that they deem is too disturbing for their children. And no, not on televisions or movies, but in real life — by implanting a device in their kids.
“What could go wrong?” you might wonder. Well, a lot, apparently.
3. Hang The DJ
What if we dated strictly by algorithm only? Kind of like Tinder, yes, but a little more…controlled. You go on dates decided for you, eat the meals chosen for you, and stay in relationships within the time determined for you. And why must you do all this? To trust that you would find the perfect match at the end of the race! The problem is, what if you know you’ve already found ‘the one’ and yet, your time together is expiring?
