It’s been a little over a year since we were first introduced to the two-decade-long friend group at Yulje Medical Centre. The group – five doctors in their 40s at different stages in life – make us laugh, cry and cry some more. The drama – a kind of “Grey’s Anatomy” meets “Friends” mix – has been lauded as one of the best K-dramas of 2020, topping K-Drama lists worldwide. A part of its appeal lies in the magic that is the writer, Lee Woo Jung, who is known for her work on the “Reply” series (Reply 1997, Reply 1994 and Reply 1988).
Bonus info: she’s also the writer responsible for the popular variety-reality shows 2 Days & 1 Night, Qualifications of Men, Grandpas/ Sisters/ Youth Over Flowers and Three Meals a Day.
The other part? The talented mix of actors cast for the roles of the main five – Jo Jung Suk, Jung Kyung Ho, Yoo Yeon Seok, Jeon Mi Do, and Kim Dae Myung. With Hospital Playlist Season 2 dropping on Netflix today, it’s time to delve back into the lives of Ik Joon, Jun Wan, Jung Won, Song Hwa, and Seok Hyung. Now if you’re new to the series – STOP! – because we’re about to discuss what season 2 means for the group. But, if you’re looking to refresh your memory, read on to find out what to expect from Hospital Playlist 2!
Lee Ik Jun (Cho Jung Seok)

We watched him juggle his responsibility as a hepatobiliary surgeon, a single father to Woo Joo and the hospital’s social butterfly. Now, in season two, will we see him add the role of boyfriend to the mix? After all, he did just confess his feelings for Chae Song Hwa (Jeon Mi Do). Whether or not she reciprocates his feelings, we’ll have to wait and see. Director Shin Won Ho has already promised that we’ll be seeing “relationships with even more depth”. Be it his relationship with Woo Joo, possible romance with Song Hwa or his friendships, how will Ik Jun be able to deal with it all?
Ahn Jeong Won (Yoo Yeon Seok)

Soooo… no, he’s not going to be a priest. Yeap, just in case you’d forgotten, in the first season of Hospital Playlist, Jeong Won was wrestling with the decision of whether or not to devote his life to God. His love for his profession as a pediatric surgeon, service to God and overall altruistic nature saw him kinda / maybe / almost / but ultimately not choose the change in life direction. Instead, he now makes up one half of the “Winter Garden” couple, with his other half being Jang Gyeo Wool (Shin Hyun Bin) – took him long enough to finally accept her love! If you’re still replaying that Christmas kiss, well, we’re only going to get more sweet moments from them as they navigate their new relationship status.
Kim Jun Wan (Jung Kyung Ho)

Man, it didn’t take long for Hospital Playlist to prove the whole “don’t just a book by its cover” idiom, innit? After all, prickly cardiothoracic surgeon Kim Jun Wan turned out to be warm-hearted and a reallllll romantic – you know, once his relationship with Ik Jun’s sister Ik Sun (Kwak Sun Young) took a turn for the better; a lovey-dovey turn to be exact. Now, with Ik Sun having gone abroad and the couple launching into an LDR (ugh, we’ll reserve our opinions on this) we see Jun Wan’s couple ring for her returned to him. A mistake with logistics or…?
Yang Seok Hyeong (Kim Dae Myeung)

Is romance finally on the cards for OB-GYN Seok Hyeong? Or will his introverted nature see him continue to enjoy his alone time? I mean, Chu Min Ha (Ahn Eun Jin) has very naturally made herself a part of his days, will he finally reciprocate her confession of love? Or… will the reemergence of his ex-wife put a wrench in any possibility of a new romance?
Chae Song Hwa (Jeon Mi Do)

So, we see Ik Jun visiting Song Hwa after her move to the hospital’s regional branch – perfectly (?) timed for just before he leaves for his conference in Spain – and here, he confesses his love for her. Honestly, the situation, with Ik Jun saying…
“I have a friend, whom I’ve known for a long time. But I started to like her. If I tell her how I feel, things might get a little awkward. But if I chicken out again and not tell her, I’ll regret it for the rest of my life. What should I do?”
… still sets my heart aflutter. Well, a flustered Song Hwa doesn’t seem to answer him – she doesn’t accept his confession nor does she reject it. We can assume that in Season 2, we’ll see the long time friends meet again, but will they transition into long-time lovers? Hmmm…
Now, what are you waiting for? The weekend? Nah uh, Hospital Playlist 2 will be released on Netflix today (June 17 2021), with a new episode every Thursday at 10 PM so get on it!
