10 Breakup Anthems of the ’00s That Still Get Us Through Breakups Today

today4 October 2020

Background

Breaking up is never easy, I know. There are various stages post-breakup that people tend to go through. After all, everyone processes breakups differently. You may be ready to move on immediately while your best friend lies on their couch in sweatpants while eating ice cream for days. But one thing’s for sure, for each stage, we have a song that we will cry, scream or simply use as an anthem to embrace our singlehood with – and that’s perfectly okay. Let’s be real though, are they really ‘breakup anthems’ if they weren’t from the 2000s? That’s the era where Britney was dating Justin and *N SYNC was still a thing. The days when we sat and watched them crown American Idols that we never heard from again (sans Kelly Clarkson and Kelly Underwood, of course) and when Destiney’s Child was made up of more members than they have now.

So of course, we’re going to revisit the banging tunes we cried, danced and screamed to because they still deserve a place on our “Breakup Anthems” playlists.

Kelly Clarkson — “Since U Been Gone”

Breakup lyrics: But since you been gone / I can breathe for the first time / I’m so movin’ on, yeah, yeah / Thanks to you / Now I get what I want

Macy Gray – “I Try”

Breakup lyrics: I try to say goodbye and I choke / Try to walk away and I stumble / Though I try to hide it, it’s clear

Britney Spears — “Stronger”

Breakup lyrics: There’s nothing you can do or say, baby / I’ve had enough / I’m not your property as from today, baby

NE-YO — “So Sick”

Breakup lyrics: And I’m stronger than this (Enough is enough) / No more walkin ’round with my head down / I’m so over bein’ blue, cryin’ over you;

*N SYNC — “Bye Bye Bye”

Breakup lyrics: I want to see you out that door / Baby bye bye bye

Justin Bieber — “Love Yourself”

Breakup lyrics: You think you broke my heart, oh girl for goodness sake / You think I’m crying on my own, well I ain’t

Usher — “Burn”

Breakup lyrics:Think it’s best we go our separate ways / Tell me why I should stay in this relationship / When I’m hurting baby, I ain’t happy baby

Destiny’s Child — “Survivor”

Breakup lyrics:Now that you’re outta my life, I’m so much better / You thought that I’d be weak without ya, but I’m stronger

Coldplay — “Fix You”

Breakup lyrics: When you love someone but it goes to waste / Could it be worse?”

JoJo — “Leave (Get Out)”

Breakup lyrics:Get out (leave) right now / It’s the end of you and me / It’s too late (now) and I can’t wait for you to be gone
