This world is a terrifying place, and what could be more terrifying than wild animals, killers, robbers, or terrorists? The forces of the unseen. As they are not from the same realm as we are, ‘getting rid’ of them can be tricky — lest you are carried away into their world along with them. Not only that, just one glimpse of these entities will send you scurrying away and (maybe) traumatise you for life… after all… you can’t kill what’s already dead.
1. ‘Pocong’
Believed to be originating from Indonesia, ‘Pocong’ resembles its Western counterpart – known as the ‘mummy’. However, ‘Pocong’ is said to be a dead body covered in a burial shroud that is tied off on the top of the head. Many people say that if the knot is not released before the burial to expose the face, then the ‘Pocong’ will hop around begging for someone to help untie it.
2. ‘Orang Minyak’
One of P. Ramlee’s successful films, ‘Sumpah Orang Minyak’, features this supernatural character who ends up striking a deal to steal the virtue of 21 girls within 3 days. ‘Orang Minyak’ is usually unclothed, and covered in oil, on the prowl for superpowers that will allow him to commit evil crimes undetected. In 2005, hysteria broke across the Kuala Lumpur General Hospital where an ‘Orang Minyak’ was reportedly attempting to make the nurses there its victims.
3. ‘Pontianak’
Forever immortalised in one of the saddest and most tragic stories that was made into Malaysian film (called ‘Pontianak Harum Sundal Malam’), the name of this entity is a combination of 3 words: ‘puan’ meaning ‘lady’, ‘mati’ meaning ‘dead’, and ‘anak’ meaning ‘child’. Put these words together and you’ll find it paints the picture of a woman who dies during childbirth. Seeking revenge against men, the appearance of this entity is usually preceded by the scent of jasmine flowers.
