WHAT IS GUA SHA?
Gua sha is actually an ancient Chinese practice for energy flow and blood circulation. The technique can be used on the whole body and is traditionally quite vigorous—using a flat tool, the skin is scraped until red. But this new resurgence of the trend is a gentler form. Using a smaller version of the tool—made out of both body and chakra-safe crystal—one applies a firm pressure over the face, scraping across the skin in long strokes.
The eventual effect of the practice results in better skin. Blood circulation, lymphatic drainage and skin elasticity are all improved, while things like muscle tensions and wrinkles are reduced.

IS GUA SHA SAFE?
Absolutely! Although we wouldn’t recommend DIY-ing the intense, full-body version, an at-home routine for the face is safe. However, unlike a crystal roller, your Gua sha tool shouldn’t be cold. The cold tends to constrict blood vessels, which is the opposite of what you want. So, skip the fridge!

DOES GUA SHA ACTUALLY WORK?
Like all beauty treatments, there is a certain level of scepticism involved with Gua sha.Ie: ‘’Why spend minutes every day rubbing a rock on your face if it isn’t actually going to help at all?’’ Luckily, there are studies out there that speak to its results. Most of them agree that consistent use of the tool helps improve microcirculation (some studies suggest an increase of up to 400%), and blood flow to the face.

WHICH GUA SHA TOOL IS RIGHT FOR ME?
Considering they’re used on different parts of the body, Gua sha tools come in multiple different shapes. From rounded curves to scrape over the cheek, to wedged shapes for use on the jaw and brow bone, there’s many to choose from.
Below, some of the most common types and their alleged, specific benefits:
- Rose Quartz – The stone of compassion and all things love-related, rose quartz is said to be best for detoxing, lifting and softening fine lines and wrinkles, alongside draining toxins and negativity.
- Jade – In traditional Chinese medicine, it is believed that jade has the ability to help balance your inner energies and relax the nervous system. It’s considered best for reducing puffiness and encouraging lymphatic function.
- Amethyst – Amethyst is said to ward off negative energy and stress as it emits negative ions. It is said to have a cooling effect on the skin and can help release muscular tension in the jaw and temples. Also best for preventing bacteria and tightening pores, making it ideal for acne-prone skin.
- Black Obsidian – With elements of fire, water and earth involved in its formation, black obsidian is used to draw out negative energy—rejuvenating the skin on all levels and benefiting muscle tissues over time.
