A Demon Hunting K-Pop Girl Group? Yeah, It’s Happening

today11 March 2021

Background

Sure, K-pop groups have had some really interesting album concepts; look at æspa, the four-member girl group by SM Entertainment, who recently debuted alongside their digitalised “avatars” to represent their namesake, which combines the words “Avatar” and “Experience”. But demon hunters?

Well, that’s exactly what Sony Animation has in the works (sorry, it’s not an ACTUAL, real-life girl group) as they’ve confirmed a musical film revolving around the idea.

According to a post on their Instagram page, the film…

“… follows a world-renowned K-Pop girl group as they balance their lives in the spotlight with their secret identities as bada** demon hunters.”

Sony Animation was the studio behind the highly acclaimed, award-winning “Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse” animated film so you know that this is going to be EPIC. Not only that, at the helm of the film is directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans (who worked on “Rise of the Guardians together”. Kang, whose credits include “Puss in Boots, “Trolls” and more, describes the film as a homage to her Korean roots, her love for K-Pop and comes at a time when K-Pop is at the forefront of the global music industry. Since the announcement, Kang has taken to Twitter to share the news and retweet reactions from fans. In one of them, she mentions how pitching the idea for “an animated kpop demon hunter movie” was accompanied by confusion.

Meanwhile, illustrator Appelhans has 2009’s “Caroline” and “The Princess and the Frog” as well as the more recent “Wish Dragon” in his repertoire. Applehans said of the upcoming feature:

“I’ve always wanted to do a film about the power of music – to unite, bring joy, build community. K-Pop is the greatest embodiment of this in our lifetime, and we’re really excited to honor and showcase that through the lens of animation.”

Also included in the project is Oscar-winning “Shrek” producer Aron Warner. Production design will be left to Mingjue Helen Chen of “Big Hero 6” and “Raya and the Last Dragon” with help from fellow “Raya” colleague, art director Ami Thompson. Not much else is known in terms of scheduling, with Sony slated to drop “Hotel Transylvania 4” and the presently untitled “Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse” sequel slated for  2022. Fingers crossed we get to see”K-Pop: Demon Hunters” really, really soon!
