Before ‘Cruella’, We Had…

today8 June 2021

Background

While everyone is going crazy over Disney’s latest offering, Cruella, let’s not forget the OG fashion-tyrant themed film The Devil Wears Prada.

Starring Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway, this comedy film is directed by David Frankel and was a huuuge hit back in 2006. There are also plenty of callbacks and real-life references to well-known establishments and people in the industry — and plenty of cameos, too! (In Cruella, many expected a cameo of Glenn Close, who was the first person to play the character in the live-adaptation of 101 Dalmatians but sadly, she didn’t materialise.)

Mirren plays the strict (and sometimes cruel) fashion tyrant Miranda, who is a mirror of Cruella’s Baroness. And played by Hathaway, we have Andy Sachs, who bears a few too many similarities to that of Emma Stone’s character…

For starters, both characters began their path in the savage fashion industry as underlings. Cruella de Vil (or, rather, Estella) was scrubbing toilets while Andy was treated like a minion by her boss, Miranda. But both characters eventually catch the eye of their respective mentors, before getting stuck in a whirlwind adventure that eventually changes them (and not for the better).

Also, it can’t be a coincidence that both films have the word ‘devil’ in it…

But that’s where the similarities end. As Cruella morphs into her evil alter-ego and begins her descent into madness, Andy manages to turn her life around before she completely loses herself by quitting the fashion world. And, she also seemed to have made amends with Miranda. As for Cruella? Who knows…

With a sequel coming up, we can’t wait to see what Cruella is up to next!
