Cartoons Are Just For Kids? Here’s 3 Local Animated Films That Will Change Your Mind!

today8 April 2021

Animation made its way into this world in 1908 in the form of traditional, hand-drawn 2D animation. With the evolvement of technology, artists and animators have taken it up a notch by introducing an entirely new world of 3D animation!

And if anyone says animations are for children — tell them they’re wrong. There is no room for negotiation! Animated visuals are astounding and there is much to appreciate no matter how old you are.

And our local animation scene ain’t bad at all!

1. Ejen Ali: The Movie

Here’s something to make you proud: Ejen Ali: The Movie is the 2nd highest-grossing animated film of all time in Malaysia, beaten only by Frozen II. It even rose above the likes of Toy Story 4, How to Train Your Dragon: Hidden World, and Frozen.

You can tell just how much work was put into this masterpiece — from the hair texture, skin, as well clothes — the devil is in the details!

2. BoBoiBoy Movie 2

The sequel to BoBoiBoy: Movie 2, this action-packed film brings you on an adventure to thwart the threats of an ancient evil. This movie is perfect for superhero fans like Marvel and DC!

Not only is BoBoiBoy: Movie 2 the 3rd highest-grossing animated film of all time in Malaysia, it has even garnered international recognition when it took home two awards at the Laurus Film Festival in Russia. Nominees from Australia, UK and Brazil were completely knocked-out!

3. Upin & Ipin: Keris Siamang Tunggal

Now, this is every local kids’ favourite cartoon on TV9, now turned into multiple movies.

This film became the second-highest grossing local animation film of all time when it was released, garnering several awards including the Best Feature Film at the 2019 Montreal International Animation Film Festival as well as the Golden Wing Award for Best Animation of the Year category at the Animation Game Industry Annual Conference & Anime Beijing Awards 2019.

Swayed yet? Go ahead. Sit down and watch at least one of these movies. We dare you!
