As we prepare to say goodbye to Melissa Benoist’s titular character of Supergirl in the CW show – the sixth season of Supergirl, which debuts in 2021 on The CW, will be its last – we’re set to be introduced to a whole new Supergirl. This time, the change will be similar to that of when Ezra Miller was introduced as the Flash in 2016’s ‘Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice’ – Supergirl is going from the small screen to the big screen. The question is though: who could take up the mantle of Supergirl, following Benoist’s well-loved portrayal of the character since way back in 2015? As it stands, casting Miller as Flash was largely protested by fans of the CW show who were already invested in Grant Gustin’s Scarlet Speedster.
According to Deadline (who broke the news), the role will be given to Daytime Emmy nominee Sasha Calle, making her the first Latina Supergirl in DC’s history.

Calle broke out into the acting scene in 2018, with her role as Lola Rosales on ‘The Young and the Restless’. The Boston-born Colombian actress received a Daytime Emmy Award nomination for ‘Outstanding Younger Performer in a Drama Series’ in 2020 for her performance on the show. Since her debut, she has also starred in the YouTube miniseries ‘Socially Awkward’.
The Flash’s director, Andy Muschietti (who cast all the amazing young actors from the first ‘It’ movie), said of the decision:
“I saw more than four hundred auditions. The U.S., Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, Colombia. The talent pool was truly amazing and it was very hard to make a decision, but we finally found an actress who was destined to play this role,”
There is said to have been various stages to the auditions too, with actresses only finding out very late in the process what part they were reading for. Calle, who got through to the later stages of the auditions, also did a chemistry read with Miller over zoom. Muschietti went on to share Calle’s adorable reaction to the news that she had gotten the part, captioning the video:
“Been doing a lot of flashbacks lately but today is about a Flash forward. #TheFlashMovie @sashacalle.”

In the video, Muschietti takes his time sharing the news with Calle, sharing that casting for the role hadn’t yet been decided but that he had a few more questions for her.
“Can you fly? Do you want to fly?”
Before whipping out the Supergirl suit. The minute the news registers, Calle bursts into tears, sharing:
“Little me would be like, ‘No way!’ Can I freak out for a second?”
Meanwhile, the CW’s Melissa Benoist shared her support for Calle, posting on her Insta Story:
While lauded creator, BossLogic, shared his take on what Calle could look like as Supergirl (as seen in the cover image for this article) and it’s honestly, exciting!

In his rendering, Calle has kept her brunette locks. However, there is no word yet on if this will be carried into the movie, with Supergirl being known to be blonde. At the same time, taking into account the fact that ‘The Flash’ is expected to draw characters from various areas of the DC multiverse, it’s hard to pinpoint which ‘Supergirl’ (Kara Zor-El? Linda Danvers? Cir-El?) Calle will be embodying. We’ll just have to wait and see when ‘The Flash’ hits theatres on Nov. 4, 2022, with Ezra Miller as Barry Allen, Kiersey Clemons as Iris West, Billy Crudup as Henry Allen, and Ben Affleck and Michael Keaton as their respective takes on Batman.
