Oh dear…
A promotional event for arguably the most anticipated movie event of the year, Fast & Furious 9 that was scheduled to take place in Shanghai, China today was canceled by Universal Pictures after they received threats.

“Currently, Universal Pictures received threats that would make it impossible for us to hold the press conference and could cause considerable security risks. Although Universal Pictures poured a lot of effort into the press conference, security will always be our top priority. As a result, after careful evaluation, Universal Pictures was forced to cancel the press conference for Fast & Furious 9,” Sputnik quoted the US film production company’s statement shared on its official Weibo account.
The company reportedly forwarded the details of the said threats to law enforcement agencies in China.

If it weren’t for this unfortunate incident, the promotional event would have allowed Chinese fans to experience the incredible car chasing scenes from the movie, the production company said.
Nevertheless, the movie will be released in cinemas in China according to plan this Friday, they said.

The Fast & Furious franchise as a whole has absolutely banged in the Chinese market, representing Hollywood films. As proof, the previous installment, The Fate of the Furious 8 made 2.6 billion Yuan (RM 1.7 billion), which has crowned it as the highest-grossing movie in the nation’s box office history.
Following success in containing the local Covid-19 transmissions, cinemas in China were allowed to open its doors to moviegoers beginning last July.
Looks like China will be able to watch the movie as it is scheduled to release. Sorry Malaysians, y’all are going to have to be patient because it looks like we might have to wait a bit longer!
