“The Conjuring: Devil Made Me Do It” looks like it’s going to out-scare “A Quiet Place Part II” at the domestic box office with an estimated $25 million in 3,102 cinemas this weekend.

The Paramount studios film “A Quiet Place Part II” did make the biggest debut during the pandemic last weekend with $48 million and continued its progression with $58 million, and it will continue to push through the weekend with an estimation to collect $20 million, putting the film in second place.

Last Friday, “The Conjuring 3” took in $9.67 million while “A Quiet Place Part II” did $6.08 million, giving the latter film quite a lead also noting the fact that it debuted on HBO Max.

“The Conjuring 3” tells the story of Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga rejuvenating their roles as paranormal experts, investigating demonic happenings that trace back to the 1981 murder trial of Arne Cheyenne Johnson. Films in “The Conjuring” universe have generally had solid box office success, and if its third installment brings in its estimated $25 million, it will beat 2018’s “Annabelle Comes Home,” which debuted at $20 million.

These box office battles are proof that cinemas are showing high traffic of visitors after over a year of delay and empty cinemas due to the pandemic. This is just a warm-up, as the summer sees promising blockbusters such as Marvel’s “Black Widow” and James Gunn’s “Suicide Squad”. These films can expect the numbers to pump the traffic up back to normality.

The entertainment industry is showing promise of recovery. As for Malaysians, we’re meant to wait a bit longer to go back to normal but fret not, surely we’ll get there!
