Fashion has always been about pushing the boundaries between art, expression, individuality and practicality. More often than not, we find ourselves asking a lot of questions when it comes to fashion.
“How do you put this on?”
“Where would I even wear this to?”
“Why aren’t there any other colour options?”
“What were they thinking when they designed this?”
And the biggest, most important question of all when shopping:
“Why is this so expensive?”
Combine the last two questions and you get an unending barrage of flack thrown towards designers. In the latest instalment of “What Were They Thinking”, netizens have been tearing into a foreign brand that’s selling zip ties – what we fondly know as “cable ties” – as accessories for a mind-numbing price range. The brand has multiple variations to their zip-tie accessories: regular a ring, a two-finger ring, earrings and a bracelet.
Prices for these zip tie accessories range from RM1,579 to RM2,146, while a set (of the regular ring, earrings and bracelet) could set you back by RM5,119. Not only are people astounded by the fact that something as simple as a zip tie has become a “fashion statement”, but they’re also appalled at the prices that these items are being sold at. Netizens, in their shock, have brought up some very valid points:
“Go to [the grocers] and get it free, hahaha”
“It’s better to buy fine gold, at least it’ll have value at the end of the day,”
While others saw the situation as a great business opportunity:
“For sale… cheap cheap only… rm300″
Meanwhile, this one netizen is so done with the brand:
“Instead of buying that voodoo thing, better to buy a gold bracelet or a gold ring, it’s worth the price. Whoever buys this is indeed extremely stupid,”
As it turns out, the brand has famous fans like Kanye West and Lady Gaga – although, they may not have been seen sporting the luxury cable ties zip tie accessories, in particular. However, the brand is an established one, having collaborated with UNDERCOVER, Off-White, Nike, CONVERSE and more. It is known for its “quirky” and “experimental” jewellery so make no mistake, the zip ties aren’t the only fashionable every day, miscellaneous items that you can get for a staggering price. They also feature a safety pin earring that costs RM950 (it says ‘earring’, so we’re guessing that’s the price of ONE) and a matching bracelet for RM3,645.
If you’re feeling “extra” or “fancy” (or, really extra fancy) you can get a golden penyepit baju (clothespin) for a discounted price of RM733 (it’s on sale now but it’s OG price is set at RM1,830) or a bicycle lock-turned-neck-lock for RM3,500.
But, of course, at the end of the day: you’re paying for craftsmanship and quality. Comparing an everyday zip tie to a finely crafted accessory just doesn’t work. As fashion is an art, maybe – like art – we should just admire their work and applaud them for their gusto.
