Don’t judge a book by its cover!
In an operation carried out by Sarawak Energy and Miri District police, an illegal cryptocurrency mining port was discovered in an old wooden house that was home to 44 crypto mining devices worth RM 225,000.

Sarawak Energy authorities discovered that the house uses electricity illegally from nearby transformer sites.

Illegal usage of energy is an offence under Ordinan Tenaga, Seksyen 33(5) law that is punishable for as much as RM 100,000 or imprisonment for as long as 5 years if found guilty.

Besides breaking the law, the illegal activity can also threaten the safety of other users as well as the energy grid system.
So, how much energy does this mining port actually consume? It depends on the type of mining equipment. According to a website that gathers crypto enthusiasts, the Bitmain Antminer S9i eats up to 1,320 Watts of energy and produces a hash rate as high as 14 Terahash. 1320 Watts equals 1.32kW/h or 31.68kWj per day. If there are 44 devices running simultaneously, it’s almost 41MWj per month. In simple English, that’s almost equivalent to the electricity usage of an entire small city!
Netizens were amused to find this discovery when it was shared on Twitter by @datukhensem. This user summed up the scene with a simple analogy.
