Not Feeling Like Yourself Because Of The Pandemic? You’re Not Alone!

today21 April 2021

Background

Don’t let the pandemic dull your shine!

You’re not alone if you feel like your mental agility has been affected after the various COVID-19 waves that have hit the country.

This problem has been felt throughout the globe. Thankfully, researchers from Scotland have investigated this problem and have come up with both a reason for this and – a solution. Dr Christopher Hand, of Glasgow Caledonian University, Greg Maciejewski and Joanne Ingram, of the University of the West of Scotland used the analogy:

“Your brain in lockdown conditions behaves like a neglected house: it fills with dust and cobwebs. To recover its abilities, it needs a good spring cleaning.”

It’s like astronauts, trekkers, or patients recovering from major surgeries: when you’ve gone a while without having social interaction, especially in-person interaction, it’s going to feel a bit off (foreign. even) when you eventually get back out there. So all you have to do is recharge and use that social energy battery! Simple, isn’t it?

The studies showed that even people who have never faced this kind of problems were also affected. The research studied the behaviour of 342 Scots, all adults (between 18 and 72 years), between May and July 2020. This is the period during which pandemic restrictions were gradually lifted in the United Kingdom.

The study revolved around four major aspects; attention, learning ability, work memory and time perception. With time, the behaviour of the respondents gradually improved. This was also because there were fewer restrictions and they could go out more – which meant more social interaction. Most importantly, they were exposed more to sunlight. Remember guys, you need to soak up in the sun a bit to stay healthy!

This goes to show that despite having the gadgets and technology to be able to communicate with friends and family virtually, it still just isn’t quite the same as seeing them in person. But of course, safety always comes first. So until cases come under control, it’s still best to communicate with your loved ones under safe measures.

So don’t worry, despite the limitations and challenges that we face today, we’re positive that your social energy bar will be soon recharged like before!
