The social media impact is strong beyond imagination. That was the message that was attempted to be delivered to the world when a photo of TikTok video host Khaby Lame was shared of his income following his creations. A side note from the posting also acknowledged his girlfriend.

“Khaby Lame has gotten between $13,380 and $22,300 (RM55,232.64 – RM92,054.40) for each of his video creations. His girlfriend on the other hand says Khaby is someone handsome and romantic.”

While the message was regarding his income following his social media influence, a fellow Malaysian decided that another aspect of Khaby would make a better headline.

His tweet reads:

“It’s fine if you’re not handsome, as long as you’re rich. Don’t be too smart, later you won’t get married.”

This tweet made others rage as netizens stated that he was trying to imply that being dark skinned meant that one isn’t good looking.

The reality of the situation shows that there are still people who believe being good looking falls on the colour of one’s skin. A fight still being fought after all these years.

Let us reiterate that being beautiful or handsome should have nothing to do with whether one is light or dark skinned. Racism has no place in this world. From social media to sports, it’s our responsibility to ensure we kick racism out of our society.

“I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.” – Martin Luther King Jr.
