While the pandemic has tested the patience of many people, you can still see some form of warmth within the community. It doesn’t even have to be a massive deed. The simplest of gestures can make someone’s day.
Such as this one that happened in Singapore shared on Facebook by Andrew Wong last Monday.
It all started when the cleaner wanted to remove Andrew’s serving tray from his table, but he stopped her as he needed to return the cutlery to the cleaning station.
“She told me that won’t be necessary because she will clean the table after we are done. It will be even more troublesome for her to push the trolley to the tray return station and send the used cutlery to the cleaning station.”
Rebutting the response saying that she works fast, she later mumbled something in Hokkien, to which Andrew interpreted along the lines of “buying a drink”. Andrew thought that it was a request for HIM to buy HER a drink, which he was all up for.
Surprisingly to him, however, she clarified that it was actually a treat for him and his dining companion, stating that she has a pre-paid tab at the drink stall.
“We were dumbfounded and didn’t know what to reply.”
Andrew and his companion politely declined the offer but continued to have small talk with her, asking if she had already eaten as they wanted to buy food for her. She then told them that she already did, before resuming back to her duties.
Andrew and his companion continued to be baffled as to why the cleaner approached them. It was moments after that that he and his companion realized they were eating “a very spicy bowl of ban mian” and they were sweating.
He proceeded to find the cleaner and ask if she offered the drinks because he was “perspiring in agony”. Andrew’s question left the cleaner with laughs, to which he joined as well.
Before saying goodbye, Andrew promised her that he would drop by again to say “hello” after finding out she works there every evening.
It’s heartwarming stories like this that can shape a smile on a reader’s face. It also proves that the smallest of gestures can light up someone’s day. Do good and be good. You never know what a person could be going through.
