today2 July 2021

Financial struggles have forced a family of 5 to squeeze in a small room in Jalan Munshi Abdullah, Melaka.

The room was reportedly only as big as 3.65 x 6 meters and was home to 45-year-old Erala Ismail and her 42-year-old husband Syed Sidiq Abudin Syed Abdul Aziz along with their three children aged between 10 and 16 years old for the past three years.

According to Erala who works as an assistant salesperson, despite her realizing that the situation isn’t comfortable for her growing children, she is forced to be content with the living conditions due to financial struggles.

“It’s not that my husband and I didn’t think about finding a comfortable place to live, but the high rental and deposit rates forced as to forget those goals.”

“Even though times are difficult, my children aren’t complaining. They completely understand their parents’ struggles. Despite that, deep down inside of me I still feel guilty,” she told Berita Harian.

She continued to explain how she’s worried about her 10-year-old daughter’s safety as they are forced to share the toilet with others living in the building.
