Is MSG Actually Bad For Health? The Internet Disagrees

today22 June 2021

Background

Don’t be fooled!

If you’re Asian, you’ve definitely had monosodium glutamate (MSG) in one of your meals before. But have you ever been told that it isn’t healthy and should be consumed as little as possible? Well, recently, conversations on Twitter about the flavour enhancer and if whether it is or not in fact harmful to one’s health started cropping up. This started after user @zami_rah shared a photo of it questioning its safety.

“I don’t know what the role of this (MSG) is. If its consumption can cause harm, why is KKM still allowing it to be sold?”

The tweet received various replies, but most of them defended the use of the food enhancer.

“MSG is just a victim of discrimination from the West. In actual truth, taking salt is even more dangerous compared to MSG as the sodium content in MSG is far less than salt. You can find out more about Chinese Restaurant Syndrome if you want to know what discrimination of MSG is.”

“There are actually many researches done that have proved that MSG is not as bad as it was said to be. (I) highly encourage to study about MSG. If you wanna say that is brings harm, salt and sugar actually cause harm.”

This local explained (on a personal note) that it would be best to simply avoid eating outside as the amount of MSG restaurants put in their dishes may not be moderate. This would cause side effects just as migraines, vomiting and diarrhoea.

You can read more about MSG intake in medical reports here. But overall, it seems like MSG isn’t as bad as you were told it was! Just like Uncle Roger said:

At the end of the day, as with everything in life, balance is key. Overconsumption of any one thing is not advised.
