And this is why it’s so important to have good role models!
Recently, #BTSMeal
has been trending for a few reasons: a) the release of an exclusive meal collaboration between South Korean supergroup BTS and fast-food chain McDonald’s and b) an amazing initiative by Malaysian ARMYs. The initiative itself involves sponsoring the meal (which consists of 10 pieces of nuggets, a drink, fries and two exclusive new sauces) for frontliners and NGOs.
Twitter user @PartOfJimin first tweeted of the initiative the day after the release of the BTS meal in Malaysia, asking:
I wanna send some sets to IJN hospital from ARMY to frontliner. Anyone wants to join? Let me know! https://t.co/M4EAZIQbL0

Speaking to Fly, Twitter user @PartOfJimin shared:
“My best friend is working at IJN and she’s been working non-stop since pandemic started with not enough sleep, makan tak menentu (with inconsistent meal times), mental health condition and other stuff. It’s sad that I couldn’t help her much and can only watch from afar. I’ve been wanting to send something to her to cheer up her day even with little thing with the message ‘hang in there, you got this.'”
Since her initial tweet, a total of 108 sets of the BTS Meal has been distributed to frontliners in Institut Jantung Negara (IJN), Sultan Ahmad Shah Medical Centre Kuantan, Hospital Angkatan Tentera (HAT) Tuanku Mizan and Putrajaya Hospital thanks to the collective effort of over 41 Malaysian ARMYs. Today (the 31st of May), two more batches of deliveries of the BTS Meal will be made to Hospital Tengku Ampuan Rahimah (HTAR) Klang and NGO – The National Autism Society of Malaysia (NASOM).

Twitter user @PartofJimin is not the only Malaysian ARMY member to helm a similar project, with other Malaysian ARMYs also organising a similar meal distribution. When asked why ARMYs were so receptive to the idea, @PartOfJimin shared:
“Contributing to society has been part of K-pop fandom culture for years. When BTS donates to charities, they inspire ARMYs to do the same. As fans, we usually follow the example set by our idols. Fans will contribute to specific causes or do volunteer work in tribute to the idols. Channelling this passion back to the community and contributing to society is an unparalleled feeling. It also helps us to broaden our perceptions of the world.”
One of the many reasons that BTS is so well-loved is the fact that the members have – since their debut in 2013 – always worked to address social issues in their music and in their day-to-day activities. The Grammy-nominated group has songs that tackle bullying, self-love and mental health. They’re also ambassadors for UNICEF’s “LOVE MYSELF” campaign, an effort to end violence and neglect as well as promotes self-esteem and well-being. Last year, during the Black Lives Matter movement, BTS donated $1 million to the cause that aimed to provide justice, healing and freedom to Black lives across the globe. In support of their beloved artists, the BTS’ fandom matched their donation, arriving at a whopping total of $2 million in donations to the cause.

It’s no wonder that the fandom was recently awarded the title for ‘Best Fan Army’ at the 2021 iHeart Music Awards. As @PartOfJimin shared:
“They’re one of my sources of happiness. I believe ARMYs out can relate to the fact that their lyrics are very reliable and inspirational. It inspired us to not give up in the face of hardship, to believe that there is always hope in tomorrow; whatever your dream is, you can achieve it if you believe and work hard for it. Through their music, I also learned to appreciate myself (self-love) to believe in myself more.”
And in the same way that BTS inspires ARMYs, ARMYs give strength to the group.
