*T/W: Depression and suicide attempt. Reader discretion is advised.
Residents of PPR Beringin Kuala Lumpur were shocked and terrified for the life of a man who attempted to jump from the window of his apartment building. In this video, posted by Jabatan Netizen Malaysia (@jnmalaysia), the man can be seen in danger of falling from a great height while another man is holding onto him.
A resident’s voice can be heard, shouting,
“Kasi tarik!
(Pull him up!)”
The man can be seen fighting the man who was trying to save him but it didn’t seem to deter his would-be rescuer from fighting even harder to pull him up. At one point he even grabbed at the back of the man’s neck to save him, before continuing to hold onto him.
In another video, also posted by Jabatan Netizen Malaysia, the events can be seen from another angle. A woman can be heard pleading with the suicidal man, shouting,
“Benda boleh bincang! Naik, dik!
(We can talk about this! Come up, boy!”)
She can also be heard desperately screaming,
“Wei, yang kawan tu pergi la naik kejap, tolong!
(Friends on the lower floor, go upstairs and help!”)
Meanwhile, another person can be heard talking to the authorities, presumably via phone call, stating the location where the incident is taking place. The video is cut off as soon as both men are safely back inside the house. Netizens initially mistook the rescuer to be the father of the suicidal man, but it was later revealed that the man is alone without any living family members or relatives.
The 25-year-old is successfully saved by the civilian.
Lelaki terbabit berasal dari Ipoh, Perak dan tinggal di rumah rakannya.
“Dia cuba membunuh diri kerana mengalami tekanan emosi disebabkan tiada pekerjaan dan hidup sebarang kara.

“The man hails from Ipoh, Perak and lives with his friend.
‘He tried to commit suicide due to emotional struggles caused by joblessness and having no living family or relatives.’”

Another netizen warns the public about the dangers of depression.
jangan anggap depression ni benda yang remeh ye. kita tak tahu apa yang dia rasa. kadang orang kita anggap benda ni macam tak ada apa apa sebab benda tu tak kena kat diorang sendiri. apa apa pun syukur dia diselamatkan. hampir gugur jantung ni

“Don’t take depression lightly, ya. We don’t know what he is going through. Sometimes people don’t take depression seriously because they have never experienced it themselves. Whatever it is, thank God he was saved. It felt like my heart almost dropped.”
In October last year, New Straits Times reported that almost half a million Malaysians experience symptoms of depression, according to the 2019 National Health and Morbidity Survey (NHMS 2019). It also reported that the Befrienders Kuala Lumpur patron Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye said the Covid-19 pandemic and Movement Control Order (MCO) have also caused emotional distress to many, following the change in work environment, loss of income and jobs, and fears for safety. According to The Malaysian Reserve, Befrienders Malaysia received about 4,142 calls between March 18 and May 16 when the first Movement Control Order was introduced, where over a third of the calls were suicidal in nature.
