Netizens Outraged at Misogynistic Advice & Expectations For Wives

today22 June 2021

Background

Women have always been expected to “act a certain way”, whether it’s “as a daughter” or “as a wife”. Centuries of misogyny dictates that women are “in charge” of taking care of the children, ensuring the house is always in tip-top condition and even tasked with ensuring that their husband’s needs are met. Throw in a career into the mix and it’s a wonder why women are still not being paid equally or given the same respect.

Unfortunately, even in 2021, misogynistic gender roles still exist within our community. Exhibit A: this, honestly degrading, comment on Facebook, shared by a Twitter user. The comment likens wives to prostitutes, and even goes as far as to dictate how they should dress, look and behave.

Amongst the “attributes” that the commenter says a wife should have are to:

  1. Dress sexily in front of your husband.
  2. Take care of your beauty in front of the husband.
  3. Take care of your skin so it looks soft.
  4. Speak softly like a waitress in a Thai restaurant.

He ends his “advice” by taking a hit at women for their apparently “inappropriate” appearance and behaviour.

“Most wives look hideous, don’t take care of their bodies, talk back to their husbands, have bad breath, and so much more.”

The original tweet with the comment called out the commenter, saying:

“This is an insult to wives out there! Even though the comment is from a guy [and I too am a guy], I absolutely disagree with the analogy given.”

Netizens were enraged to see such a comparison.

It goes without saying that men should be treating their wives, and women in general, with respect. It is not – and forever will not be – okay to disrespect them in any way. We are all equal in this world. It is our responsibility to kick misogyny out of our culture and community once and for all.
