Malaysia is a multicultural home to various races and that’s one of the many beautiful aspects of being Malaysian; it’s what makes this country unique.
Unfortunately, there are still some who have yet to immerse themselves in the many cultures that reside here. Netizens found this particular content creator to be disrespectful, specifically towards the Iban culture. User @fabian_rossi21 shared a video from a creator’s story where he is seen disrespecting the Iban traditional outfit.
In the 55 second video. the creator can be heard cracking “jokes” about the outfit, making rude comments like:
“Ni kain buruk lah, letak kat mesin basuh lah (This is a dirty cloth, put it in the washing machine).”
As he continues to make fun of the outfit, laughter can be heard in the background. The individual donning the kain kebat seemed to be annoyed throughout the entire story.
Netizens were not happy to see this. They did not hold back with their comments: “‘TV cloth’, ‘Dirty cloth to put in the washing machine’ Ewah ewahh…I wanna see if he’s even smart enough to make that so-called dirty cloth.”
This user said: “Never liked him in the first place… it’s like he’s using Maryam as a Korean to get fame.”
Following the heavy criticism, the creator posted a statement on his Instagram, apologizing for what he shared on his Instagram story.
The man behind the Durian Kimchi platform then followed up that simple apology with a video on his IGTV.
We’re glad that the creator has owned up to his mistakes. Racism or disrespect towards other cultures is never acceptable. Let’s be better Malaysians and respect each other regardless of race or religion.
