Onz Ke Tak? I Tried TikTok’s Ramen Lasagna Recipe

today26 March 2021

Background

Love ramen? What about cheese? Maybe you’re a fan of lasagna?

What if I told you that there’s a way to combine all three – yes, ramen + cheese + lasagna – together to make one dish?

Okay so, hear me out. There’s this dude who’s the self-proclaimed Ramen King on TikTok (his handle is literally ‘Ramen King Ivan’) named Ivan McCombs. He honestly deserves the title because, well, the dude has a WHOLE TIKTOK ACCOUNT DEDICATED TO RAMEN. He literally takes the humble ramen and turns it into a substitute in a tonne of dishes: strawberry cheesecake, pizza, ice cream, hot dogs, buffalo wings – you name it, he’s got it. On his Youtube channel, McCombs explains:

“Being a broke college student has made me get creative when it comes to making ramen noodles because you can’t just eat the broth and the noodles every single time.”

Now, on part 23 of his ramen mission, he makes ramen lasagna.

I am not a fan of ramen – instant or otherwise (don’t @ me pls). But instant noodles are a staple in Asian diets (heck, everyone has been that broke college student with a cupboard full of ’em at some point) and the idea of being able to turn something as simple as instant ramen into a dish I do love (but can’t have so often because good ones are often pricey) like lasagna is really intriguing.

What you need for the Ramen Lasagna recipe is:

• 4 blocks of instant ramen
• 1 jar of tomato sauce (the kind you use for bolognese pasta)
• 1 block of cheese
• 1 cheese grater
• 1 square oven-safe dish

Before we start, I have a disclaimer or two to get out of the way…

First things first, ain’t nobody got time to grate cheese (or the money to buy a grater for one-time use) so I bought a packet of pre-grated cheese LOL. Also, I don’t have an oven so I used an air fryer instead and lined a pan with tin-foil so the sauce stays around the ramen and doesn’t run.

The steps to make Ramen Lasagna is really, really simple:

If you’ve got an oven, preheat your oven to 350 degrees. I turned up my air fryer to the max (200 degrees) for about 10 minutes as I put the ingredients together.

Take your instant ramen and place it in your oven-safe dish, smother it in a generous helping of tomato sauce, grate cheese on top, and repeat until your bowl is full. At the end, you’re meant to crush up some uncooked ramen to sprinkle on top.

If you’ve got an oven, pop the dish in for 25 – 30 minutes. For me and my air fryer, I used a website to convert the cooking time and went with 24 minutes at 180 degrees. But, after checking it at 24 minutes, it felt undercooked so I popped it back in for another 16 minutes, for a total of 40 minutes.

Ramen lasagna: Onz ke tak?

So, Ramen King Ivan gave the recipe an 8/10. Ramen Nonfan (this is a word, IDC) Marissa is giving this recipe a…

6/10

Taste-wise, it’s actually nice. I wouldn’t say it’s bomb-dot-com but for something that just consists of three ingredients, there’s not much to complain about. It’s a super simple, easy meal. This recipe loses 2 points because, at the end of the day, it just tastes and feels like eating spaghetti bolognese. It doesn’t feel like lasagna because the bits of ramen that are not held together by the cheese needs to be eaten as you would pasta. And after all that trouble of layering and layering and layering and waiting, to not get the lasagna experience is a lillllttteeeeee disappointing. But, as McCombs pointed out, it’s fun to be creative once in a while. If you’re tired of boring ol’ ramen, give this recipe a try! Feel free to throw in your own choice of ingredients of course!
