“Thanks for the memories NTV7,” M’sians Mourn Childhood Staple With Nostalgic Tweets

today16 February 2021

Background

Twitter was once a site for personal ramblings, for people to connect with their fave celebrities on a more personal level and for sharing those weird/ mildly uncomfortable/thought-provoking shower thoughts. But now, Twitter is the place to go to see what people near and around you are talking about. Starting last night, Malaysians on the Twitterverse have been disclosing the number of accounts they have on social media sites (i.e. ‘LinkedIn-1’, ‘Instagram- 2’), the renaming of an iconic grocer and: the final day of transmission for NTV7. After being highlighted by producer and journalist Norman Goh in a tweet:

His tweet has since gone viral, prompting Malaysians to share their fond memories of the TV-station. Having been Malaysia’s second-oldest private television channel, it formed a large part of the childhoods of children growing up in the 2000s, after its introduction in 1998. Back then – before streaming was a thing and the internet took 459 hours to load ONE picture – the station was the place to go for movies, anime, Western TV shows, drama, and the variety of news bulletins (done in English, Mandarin and Malay). As such, it had something for everyone and the announcement of its rebranding has sent many down memory lane.

However, goodbye isn’t always a bad thing! It paves the way for new changes, new memories for a new generation. NTV7 will be known as DidikTV KPM from tomorrow (February 17) onwards and will be a fully educational TV channel.
