Take notes y’all!
Just as much as they are mysterious and sometimes dangerous, ocean animals are also manifestations of the beautiful wonders of nature. Whether it’s dolphins, sharks or whales, they’re definitely a sight to witness!
The same can’t be said for touching them though and that’s what this NASA intern wants to highlight through his TikTok video. @spacecadetshep explains that while he’s an intern at the world-known space association, he also happens to be an advanced scuba diver and shares his 2 cents on why you shouldn’t touch ocean life.
Repeat after me people :
“I will not touch ocean animals unnecessarily for social media clout”

“When I see videos like this, I absolutely CRINGE.”
He says that in reference to an older TikTok he had come across that shows someone ‘tickling’ a stingray.

Although it might have seemed funny to the creator and some viewers, he continues to explain why it should not be done.
“One of the first things they teach you in scuba diving is to NOT TOUCH the animals. You run the risk of hurting yourself but more importantly, you have a chance of hurting the animal as well.”
He continues his explanation, “Now I know it looks like ray is laughing when the guy tickles it, but that is a classic case of anthropomorphism.”

So what is this anthropomorphism? He explains that it’s when we assign human characteristics and behaviours to animals and non-human objects.
So in reality, while it may seem like the ray is ‘enjoying’ the moment, it is actually a very VERY stressful situation. The ocean critter naturally should be breathing water, but in that situation, it was breathing air. An equivalent example is if you were in the water and someone were to tickle you. This would forcefully make you breathe in water. Not very pleasant, is it?
“All of these videos that we see online of animals doing cute things may look fun and harmless to us but in reality, it may be a traumatic experience for the animal.”
So with that, remember guys. let’s respect the ocean life and take care of them. They’re a part of this wonderful world just as much as we are. Let’s be responsible people!
