Halsey Slams Grammys; Says It’s All About Handshakes and Bribes’

And I oop!

Following the announcement of the nominees for one of the biggest music awards in the music industry – i.e. The Grammys – the Recording Academy has been put on blast by numerous celebrities who were omitted from the list of potential winners. Amongst them is the Weeknd, who accused the Recording Academy of being corrupt. And now, Halsey has stepped up to put the academy on blast.

Taking to her Instagram stories, Ashley Nicolette Frangipane (aka, Halsey) addressed the fact that she was not included in the list of nominees, despite the critical acclaim of her third studio album ‘Manic’, released this year – which included the chart-topping single ‘Without Me’. In her lengthy message, Halsey explained that her words were prompted by the numerous apologies and sympathetic words extended to her following her lack of nominations. Her words pain the Recording Academy and its Grammy nomination process in a not-so-great light, claiming:

“The Grammys are an elusive process. It can often be about behind the scenes private performances, knowing the right people, campaigning through the grapevine, with the right handshakes and ‘bribes’…”

And in referring to the situation with The Weeknd (who is said to have been snubbed because he chose to perform at the Super Bowl as well as the Grammys, rather than at the Grammys alone), the 26-year-old singer went on to say:

“It’s about committing to exclusive TV performances and making sure you help the Academy make their millions in advertising on the night of the show”

To date, Halsey has yet to be in the running for any of the Big Four (‘Album of the Year’,  ‘Record of the Year’, ‘Song of the Year’ and ‘Best New Artist’) categories at the Grammys, while only having been nominated for a Grammy twice since the start of her career in 2012 (once for ‘Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for ‘Closer’ with The Chainsmokers and ‘Album of the Year’ as a featured artist on Justin Bieber’s ‘Closer).

Nevertheless, Halsey is a powerhouse artist in her own right. She’s been inducted into the ‘Songwriters Hall of Fame’ and has picked up one American Music Award, one GLAAD Media Award, three Guinness World Records and an MTV Video Music Award. She has also graced the cover of TIME Magazine following her inclusion in their annual list of ‘100 Most Influential People in The World’.

Maybe Drake is right, maybe these awards may no longer matter.
