From nasi lemak to fried rice, economy rice, banana leaf rice, and so many more, Malaysians just can’t get enough of rice, kan?
Like, it’s the most important staple food in the country! Plus, rice is such a versatile carb. Be it eating it with dishes, frying it, or having it as porridge, we just can’t live without rice. <3
Knowing how much we love our nasi, Jasmine challenged us to cook our favourite childhood rice dishes, woohoo!
Watch the full video below to find out what went down:
Of course, everyone had a special rice dish that was close to their hearts
Brenda: “So, like, I like fried rice, chicken rice, nasi lemak, cheese baked rice, oh my gosh.”
Zaidi: “For me, of course, Nasi Lemak Daun Pisang. I still remember last time when I was a kid, once a week, my mum will buy for me Nasi Lemak Daun Pisang from the side of the road.”
As Suresh prepared his nasi briyani, it brought back all his Deepavali memories
Suresh: “One of the fondest memories I’ve got is during Deepavali. We only cook briyani during Deepavali. She (his grandmother) will cook briyani in this huge pot. Bring it down, everyone will sit on the floor. Banana leaf spread out, all waiting to just serve, you know.”
Meanwhile, when preparing her Hong Kong cheese baked rice, Brenda shared that it’s important to tenderise the meat before marinating it
Brenda: “So, first, you must tenderise the meat. To make it juicy and succulent. We have to marinate it. Okay, now we mix-y mix. Get all the sauce in there.”
For Zaidi, his secret tip to making a good nasi lemak is to always tumbuk the ingredients with love <3
Zaidi: “Now, we talk about the sambal. So, what we have to do is we crush like this. Just imagine, like, all your enemies are here. Then, you crush them like that. But you have to cook with affection, with your love, then your food will be good and tasty.”
Finallyyyy, check out all the completed dishes! Everything looks so sedaaaaap. :9
