‘Spider-Ham’ Comedian John Mulaney Investigated by Secret Service Over SNL Joke

today4 December 2020

Background

John Mulaney is a man of many talents – he’s the voice being ‘Spider-Ham’ in ‘ Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse’; also voicing Andrew Glouberman in ‘Big Mouth’. He’s been awarded the Primetime Emmy Award for ‘Outstanding Writing for a Variety Special’ in 2018 and has hosted a slew of very successful stand-up specials. But before all that jazz, Mulaney started off as an office assistant at Comedy Central before moving on to write on the Saturday Night Live (SNL) team. Now, he occasionally hosts Saturday Night Live.

However, it turns out that Mulaney found himself in a biiiiit of a pickle when he hosted the February 29th episode of the show, earlier this year. In a recent interview with Jimmy Kimmel on ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live!’, 38-year-old the comedian found himself in trouble with The Agency (under the Department of Homeland Security) in charge of conducting criminal investigations and protecting the nation’s leaders, their families, and visiting heads of state or government. All because of a joke that SEEMED to allude to a threat against the sitting U.S. President, Donald Trump.

During the interview with Kimmel, Mulaney detailed:

“In February, I did a joke that was not about Donald Trump. The joke was about how it was a Leap Year, and Leap Year had been started by Julius Caesar to correct the calendar. And another thing that happened with Caesar was that he was stabbed to death by a bunch of senators because he went crazy.”

The problematic punchline? Mulaney ended the joke with:

“That would be an interesting thing if we brought that back now!”

And despite not name dropping anyone specific (i.e. *cough*Trump*cough*), Mulaney ended up on the watch list for the Secret Service. They, apparently, were all thinking:

And apparently, the punchline is what led to him being investigated by the Secret Service. Thankfully, he was not deemed a threat to the President of the United States.

And while he has since been cleared, Mulaney joked:

“I have to say: Am I stoked there’s a file open on me? Absolutely. Did I enjoy it in the moment? Not so much.”
