According to The New York Times, the movement to not renew the outlets’ broadcast franchise was spearheaded by President Rodrigo Duterte as a crackdown on outlets that have been critical of his run as president.
SCMP states that Duterte has had it out for ABS-CBN since his campaign in 2016.
