When fans first heard that BTS – aka the Bangtan Boys – were nominated for the Grammys, they were elated. After all, it would mark the very first time that a South Korean pop group was nominated for a Grammy, in the over six-decade history of the show. Sure, their album ‘Love Yourself: Tear’ was nominated back in 2019 but that was for Best Recording Package (an accolade for the “album cover, graphic arts, and photography”), not for their music. This time around, the boys were nominated for ‘Best Pop Duo/Group Performance’ for their hit ‘Dynamite’ and their reactions went viral for being absolutely hilarious in their varying degrees of surprise – with RM throwing his phone on the couch and V looking very, very puzzled…

Unfortunately, as the Grammys wear on, we see the boys missing out on the award, with the award instead going to Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande for “Rain on Me.” Almost immediately, ARMY’s (BTS’ fandom) took over Twitter with the hashtags #LightItUpBTS, #SetTheNightAlightBTS and #BTSOurGreatestPrize. One fan even tweeted,
“who really needs who????”
As BTS out trends the Grammys themselves.

Obviously, fans were furious. The bands first full-English track was a MASSIVE hit, debuting at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and had the biggest opening day for a song in 2020 on Spotify, with 7.778 million streams. Within 24 hours of the music videos release, ‘Dynamite’ secured the record of the most-viewed video within its first 24 hours on YouTube (101.1 million views). Thus, it’s no surprise that the fandom was livid. So much so that some fans are even accusing the award show of using the boys for clout and to garner views for the show. However, in their anger, fans did highlight that there was no shade or hate thrown towards Lady Gaga or Grande, merely that they were unhappy with the committee for failing to acknowledge the hard work that the boys put in.
Who said BTS lost grammys? It's grammys who lost BTS.

TaeTae seems like he knew that this nomination was for them just to be an audience attractor and a product for grammy's use… Now it is my turn to cry and make harder efforts to help then this year! #LightItUpBTS #BTSOurGreatestPrize #BTSARMY pic.twitter.com/tMVsRfqqN0

Nevertheless, despite losing out on the Grammy award, BTS has many other reasons to celebrate! The group have swept up three different awards at the 2021 Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards, bagging ‘Favorite Music Group’, ‘Favorite Song’ (with “Dynamite”), and ‘Favorite Global Music Star’. And, as RM himself has said…
“Please don’t forget that, whether we get the Grammys or not, we already got what we wanted and we got you, so that means we got everything.”
