Why BLACKPINK’s Appointment As New Goodwill Ambassadors Matters

today2 March 2021

Background

The South Korean phenomenon that is BLACKPINK can now add ‘Goodwill Ambassadors’ to their already monumental repertoires!

According to the Korea Herald, all four members of BLACKPINK – Jisoo, Jennie, Rosé and Lisa – ahve been appointed as advocates to raise awareness for the global campaign against climate change, in conjunction with the 26th Climate Change Conference, set to take place from Nov. 1 to 12 in Glasgow, Scotland later this year. Addressing their appointment at the British ambassador’s residence in Seoul, the girls stressed that “it’s not too late” to “learn more and work to make it better”. Thai member Lisa shared:

“The first step is to know what’s happening with climate change because it affects all of us. We want to learn more, and we hope our fans do too.”

Naming Sir David Attenborough’s ‘A Life On Our Planet’ as a pivotal eye-opener, Rosé said of the group’s position:

“I think we’ve all still got so much more to learn but if it feels good that we can be able to participate in such an important cause.”

Jennie pointed out:

“We’re losing more of the natural world every day and time is running out. […] We just really felt like we need to say something,”

Their first call to action, shared back in December to raise awareness for the 2021 UN Climate Change Conference, has been viewed over 2 million times on Youtube alone, prompting British Prime Minister Boris Johnson to send a personal letter to the girls.

“Your recent video ‘Climate Action in Your Area #COP26’ was a huge success, being viewed over 10 million times across social media platforms. Climate change is the most important issue of our time… it is fantastic that you have chosen this moment to lend your voices to this critical issue.”

Now, in a report by the UN Climate Change, 2021 is a “make or break year” to confront the global climate emergency.  Unfortunately, with the unprecedented occurrence of the global pandemic, “nations are ‘nowhere close’ to the level of action needed to fight global warming”. On a global level, Alok Sharma, president of the climate conference#COP26, has urged countries to submit ambitious climate plans before the conference in November. On an individual level, appointing the highest-charting female Korean act on the Billboard Hot 100 as their ambassador, the UN Climate Change have chosen wisely in the face of this important conference. As well as being the first girl group from any country to feature on Forbes Asia’s 30 Under 30 list, BLACKPINK is the most-followed girl group on Spotify and the most-subscribed music group, female act, and Asian act on YouTube. Choosing a group that has brought about a “revolution” – they dominate in music and fashion, on social media – could see a real difference in individual pledges towards climate change and awareness.
