Preparing for a role obviously requires you to step into the characters’ shoes and delve into their mind, but method acting requires you to actually become that character. And once the line between reality and fiction starts to blur, things can get pretty dangerous…

Here are celebrities who took it a notch too far and got themselves hurt in the process:
1. Sylvester Stallone

Stallone’s role as the ripped Rocky demanded high levels of fitness and physical strength. The character goes through all kinds of injuries, suffering blow after blow. And guess what? Some of those blows are real. And self-inflicted. Stallone said that,
“In the first round, I thought these two characters [Dolph Lundgren as Ivan Drago] should hate each other so much that they should just attack each other like pit dogs – professionalism be damned.”
Uh-oh.
“Hey I got an idea, for the first 45 seconds, really try to knock me out, I mean go for it,” Stalone suggested to his co-star. “So what you see in the first twenty seconds is real, and after the third take of taking body blows, I felt a burning in my chest, but ignored it. Later that night I couldn’t breathe very well, and they took me to the emergency room,” he added.
2. Nicholas Cage

For his performance ‘Birdy’, Cage had to pretend to be a Vietnam war veteran with severe facial injuries. And…one of those injuries include having his teeth pulled out. Which he did. Without anaesthesia.
“They were baby teeth,” he said. “So I took advantage of it and had them out. I thought it would add an interesting dimension to the role.”
Because of this, Cage spent five weeks on-set and off-set with his head wrapped up in bandages.
“The reactions on the street were brutal,” he added. “Men and women laughing, kids staring. And when I took the bandages off, my skin was all infected because of acne and ingrowing hairs.”
Oh, God.
3. Daniel Day-Lewis

Day-Lewis revealed in an interview that he “suffers doubts and anxiety before taking on a major role”, which is why he probably always gives it his all when he commits to a character. When he was playing Bill the Butcher, he wore an extremely thin woollen coat and ended up contracting pneumonia.
“I had to do my preparation,” he said. “And I will admit that I went mad, totally mad. I remembered the days of fighting on the Millwall terraces and they stood me in good stead for Bill the Butcher. He was a bit of a punk, a marvellous character and a joy to be – but not so good for my physical or mental health.”
While we do definitely do not recommend these dangerous acting methods, we do applaud how dedicated these actors are to their roles. Bravo!
