Born Earl Simmons, he noted that it was important for his children to feel like they would be able to talk to him about anything. As a father of 15 kids, he said that you have different relationships with different kids, perhaps implying that different children need different approaches as well as different care.

“At the end of the day, parents are not good parents just because they have a child,” he added. “They’re just parents.”

DMX’s untimely death on April 9 was due to the loss of functionality in multiple essential organs, reportedly his kidney, liver, and lungs — forcing him to leave behind his children who are aged between 4 to 28. During ‘Uncensored’, he also discussed how difficult it can be to maintain a relationship with children when you have separated from their mother.

“I think one of the toughest things about being a father…is how to teach your children not to listen to what their mother says about you just because you’re not together anymore,” he said. “That’s a tough one.”

He also discussed his relationship with his own mother, Arnett Simmons.

“A lot of women that aren’t the best parents, still turn out to be good grandmothers,” he said. “So that’s why…I try to bring the kids over there. The kids [that are] out of state, make sure they get pictures. I know what my grandmother meant to me. I just wanted them to have that opportunity.”

Since his untimely death, DMX’s fiancée Desiree has mourned his loss on social media, praising his qualities as a father.
