This week 27 years ago, Kurt Cobain lost his battle against depression.
He left behind a beautiful baby girl, Frances Bean Cobain who is a visual artist and musician, and a wife, the awe-inspiring frontwoman of Hole.
As a three-piece band, Nirvana, they broke through the mainstream music of the 90s and was catapulted into fame with their album ‘Nevermind’, released in 1991.
Let’s take a look at the top 3 songs from Nirvana that changed the music scene forever.
1. Where Did You Sleep Last Night (Live on MTV Unplugged)
Covered by many artists including Lead Belly, Kurt gave it his all during this performance. On the last verse, he raised it an octave higher and screamed out his heart and soul, to the applause of many.
To this day, this performance remains legendary and is still garnering views.
Watch it! The ending will give you chills.
2. Heart-Shaped Box
“She eyes me like a Pisces when I am weak,” croons Kurt in a haunting voice at the beginning of the song.
While the lyrics are cryptic and hard to decipher, the song echoes feelings of loss and loneliness, while being in love with someone.
Speculations say that the song is partly written about Courtney, but nothing has been confirmed.
3. Something in The Way
You’ve probably heard this one in the Batman trailer slated to be released in 2022.
The lyrics seem to paint a picture of the desolation and the mind work of a depressed individual. It is reminiscent of Kurt’s life during a period of homelessness.
4. Come As You Are
This song represents Kurt’s sense of individuality, and how he loathed being lumped into the mainstream music industry where he did not fit in.
An eccentric character himself, Kurt constantly urged everyone to be the truest versions of themselves. He was never afraid to embrace the unique qualities that set him apart from other artists.
5. In Bloom
Here’s a fun one.
Like many of his songs, Kurt inserted messages about Hollywood and social situations. In this particular one, he took a jab at fake fans who claim to love his music but has no idea what he stood for.
There are whispers that this song is written about Kurt’s friend, Dylan Carson, but nothing has been confirmed.
Time goes by but Kurt Cobain will never be replaced.
