Although it’s probably better known for it’s more recent TV show counterpart, the original ‘High School Musical’ trilogy lives strong in the memories of many a 90s kid. From Vanessa Hudgen’s iconic fluttery dresses to Zac Efron’s dramatic rampage through a golf course, HSM set so many trends. Now entering its 15th anniversary – yes, it’s been that long – the cast of the film have come a long way. The result of the fame of having been on such a widely popular franchise hasn’t been all glitz and glamour, of course. And cast member Ashley Tisdale – who played resident diva Sharpay Evans – had a rather “traumatic” experience as a result.

Taking to her newly launched lifestyle website, Frenshe, the 35-year-old opened up about the backlash she faced following her rhinoplasty (surgery that changes the shape of the nose) surgery in 2007. Despite it being almost 14 years ago, Tisdale felt that it was time to address the issue after being asked about it during a recent interview. The fact that it had come up “caught her off-guard”, causing her to relive the “traumatic experience” of being scrutinized by the media and the public after and pushed her to process the experience.
“In the aftermath and the hardest part, was not the recovery but the media who constantly tried to paint a picture of me as someone who didn’t like their appearance. I loved myself, but I was just a very unaware person at that time (as you all have seen my wardrobe choices LOL!). I was proud of who I was back then, and still proud now. Plastic surgery wasn’t culturally accepted then like it is now. When I got it done I was scrutinized, judged, and made to feel ashamed over my decision. I made a decision that was no one’s business (and is STILL no one’s business) and for that decision, I was constantly made to feel bad about it.”
Tisdale went on to emphasise that the procedure wasn’t about changing her appearance, but was done at the advice of her doctors following a deviated septum. Deviated septums can cause a myriad of health issues like a dry mouth (from having to constantly breathe through one’s nose), pressure or congestion in the nasal passage and trouble sleeping (due to breathing difficulties).

This isn’t the first time that Tisdale is speaking up about surgical changes. Just last year, she talked about having her breast implants removed after years of having them. At the time, Tisdale revealed that she had been dealing with a few health issues that she believed stemmed from the initial surgery. As a result, she decided it would be better to be without them.
“Years ago I underwent breast enhancement surgery. Prior to the surgery, I constantly felt my body was less than, and thought this change would make me feel more whole and more secure about myself. And for a short period of time…it did. But little by little I began struggling with minor health issues that just were not adding up […] Over the years I’ve met with many holistic and non-holistic doctors and learned the importance of living a non-toxic life.”
However, the ‘Love Me & Let Me Go’ crooner has emphasised that she isn’t against surgical enhancement.
“I have ZERO judgment towards anyone who does look forward to that day [they get surgery] — your body, your choice.”
At the end of the day, everyone’s journey towards self-acceptance is different, and the experience with surgery is an individual one as well. Always do proper research, be clear with what your reasoning for having surgery is and seek expert advice.
