Miley Cyrus & Elton John Are Covering A Metallica Song – Yeap, You Read That Right

today8 January 2021

Imagine a Metallica song (heavy metal) sung by a Disney star (whose roots are in Country music) and a glam rock / soft rock keyboardist (who has also done Disney songs).

Okay, no. To brand Miley Cryus a mere “Disney star” and Elton John a “keyboardist” is a disservice to their amazing careers and the versatility of their musical abilities. After all, we’re talking about Miley Cryus: the best-selling artist born in the 1990s with the most US Billboard 200 top-five albums in the 21st century by a female artist who also happens to be on Billboard’s ‘Greatest of All Time Artists Chart’ in 2019. Sir Elton Hercules John, on the other hand, is: one of the best-selling music artists of all time, has been inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, has been knighted by the Queen of England and is just – A Legend. With that being said, bringing the two together would definitely result in an iconic collaboration.

Now, what if you throw heavy metal band Metallica into the mix? Well, it looks like Miley Cyrus is gearing up to confuse and astound us.

The 28-year-old ‘Midnight Sun’ crooner revealed in the later half of 2020 that she’d been working on a Metallica cover album and during a recent sit down with Capital FM, she named dropped some legendary names from the music industry. Amongst the artists that fans can expect to see her collaborate with are Yo-Yo Ma and Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith. Going into more detail, Cyrus also specified a track that she’d be covering and who she’d be on it with – ‘Piano Man’ singer Elton John.

“I did a Metallica cover of ‘Nothing Else Matters’ featuring Elton John on piano, I’ve got Yo-Yo Ma, Chad Smith; so many all-stars in this band. I’m so excited about this collaboration.”

Obviously, the mix of Elton John and Metallica is an odd one – Cyrus herself acknowledged the fact.

“I mean, having Elton John and Metallica and me … I love when ingredients don’t quite fit. Or it seems like a concoction that no one would ever put together, and you gotta have someone like [the song’s producer Andrew] Watt that will take that risk.”

Well, fans of the star know that to say that Miley Cyrus is a risk-taker is an understatement.

As for her decision to make a whole cover album of Metallica songs? Cyrus has been vocal about how Metallica inspired her latest album, ‘Plastic Hearts’. The album worked as an introduction to the versatility of Cryus as an artist as she roped in the likes of Billy Idol and Dua Lipa for the tracks.
