In a collaboration we never knew we needed, Lauv and Conan Gray have released a new song and the accompanying music video. Titled, “Fake” the duo have a very simple message for those who seem to prefer online clout to real-life connections: Just, stop.

The lyrics hit hard at posers and the falsehoods that social media seems to depict when it comes to peoples lives, stating,
“Yeah, you and your friends you live on the surface
Act like you’re perfect
Everyone knows
You’re just like everyone else except for you’re better at taking photos
Ohh ohh oh oh
Yeah, why you gotta make everything a show.”
The music video, however, is a bright contrast to the chiding lyrics and slow tempo of the song. The duo appear in brightly coloured pants while sporting white tanks (not unlike what Malaysian’s see their uncles wear at home) before putting on colourful animal print jackets as they sing about someone who is “so f****** fake”. The video alludes to the same theme as the lyrics, with the pair moving through different scenes with lavish backgrounds for just long enough that they can take photos and short clips in front of these backgrounds (as people often do for Instagram). They are seen having a pillow fight, standing in front of a giant hotdog and Gray even has a full 20-second scene where his long locks are just being blown by what we think is wind (it is then revealed to just be someone holding a hairdryer).
In a statement following the release of the video, Lauv commended the crew behind the music video for adhering to all SOPs while filming. He praised them, saying,
“Thank you to the entire cast and crew for following all the strictest recommended COVID safety protocols including advance and onsite testing, masks and social distancing to order to ensure the shoot was safe as possible for everyone involved.”
