It’s like The Last Witch Hunter meets The Gladiator. The comic book adaptation by Neil Gaiman has fans waiting literally for decades, and looks like finally, The Sandman has just announced its cast. With Netflix describing their live-action rendition of the series as a “rich blend of modern myth and dark fantasy in which contemporary fiction, historical drama and legend are seamlessly interwoven.”

The series follows the people and places that are affected by the character Dream; one of the seven Endless, a group of beings older than gods. He’s at once the personification of dreams and the lord of them. The Sandman follows the people and places he affects as he tries to mend the cosmic and human mistakes that he’s made in his billions of years of existence.
It’s a hefty amount of material and a pretty complex set of characters and lore to fit into what initially looks to be an 11-episode long first season. Leading the lineup is English actor Tom Sturridge and you’ll also recognise a reunited Game Of Thrones power duo: Gwendoline Christie (Brienne of Tarth) and Charles Dance (Tywin Lannister).

But what’s interesting is, Gwendoline’s character is basically a gender swap because she will be playing as… Lucifer. Who, as everyone knows, is the ruler of hell, and with huge franchises like Game Of Thrones and Star Wars already under her belt, we think the character is in good (bad?) hands.
Meanwhile Charles Dance will take on another character of dubious villainy, though much less genteel than his previous role as Tywin Lannister in Game Of Thrones. He will play Roderick Burgess, a magician and blackmailer, in the Sandman comics one of his most notable arcs is capturing Dream. Hmmmm, as a GoT superfans myself, I am beyond excited for this show!
