Who, What, When, Where, How: Everything To Know About ‘Black Panther II’

today24 November 2020

The tragic passing of Chadwick Boseman saw the world mourn a great actor and human being. Following his loss, questions arose as to what would happen to the actor’s role as the titular comic book superhero ‘Black Panther’. After all, Boseman introduced the character to the world in such an extraordinary way, that it would be difficult to imagine anyone else taking up the mantle. However, Marvel is keen on continuing the tale of the Wakandan monarchy and its people, with The Hollywood Reporter confirming through multiple sources that Marvel is set to start shooting ‘Black Panther 2’ in Atlanta from July 2021 onwards.

As for the cast of the upcoming sequel to the 2018 award-winning movie, Letitia Wright, Lupita Nyong’o, Winston Duke and Angela Bassett are set to reprise their roles of  Shuri, Nakia, M’Baku and Queen Ramonda respectively. Also in talks to join is ‘Narcos: Mexico’ actor Tenoch Huerta, who may be the next villain to threaten the Wakandan empire.

And while Marvel has yet to confirm nor deny these claims, fans are speculating that Wright’s character, sister to King T’Challa, will be the one to take his place, as per the comics. And no, we will not be seeing the late Chadwick Boseman make a CGI- tinged appearance in the sequel.

In an interview with Argentinian outlet Clarin (as reported by The Wrap), the Executive Vice President at Marvel Studios Victoria Alonso answered questions pertaining to the use of CGI in the sequel that is slated for release in 2022. Alonso shut down the idea, stating:

“No. There’s only one Chadwick and he’s not with us. Our king, unfortunately, has died in real life, not just in fiction, and we are taking a little time to see how we return to history and what we do to honour this chapter of what has happened to us that was so unexpected, so painful, so terrible, really.”

There are many factors to consider when using a CGI double, after all – with the cost being a factor but more importantly, the possible trivialisation of Boseman’s passing. Meanwhile, using older, unused stock footage as done with ‘Star Wars – Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker’ following Carrie Fisher’s passing is also not going to be an easy feat, considering how Boseman was the protagonist. Alonso will find a way to pay tribute to the beloved actor, however, sharing:

“Because Chadwick was not only a wonder of a human being every day for the five years that we spent together, but it also seems to me that as a character what he did elevated us as a company, and has left his moment in history. I know that sometimes two months go by or three months go by in production and you say, well, it was a long time. But it is not a long time, we have to think carefully about what we are going to do, and how, and think about how we are going to honour the franchise,”
