When your solo performance unexpectedly becomes a duet…?
In the Malay community, we are always reminded by our grandparents that the bathroom is a spirit’s favourite haunt, or where they like to hang out, so to speak. Some of us are even advised to bathe in ‘kain batik’ or in our underwear, driving home the point that we are never truly alone in the bathroom and that “something” might be watching us as we wash ourselves.
TikTok user Indah manages to prove just that with a chilling short video of herself supposedly singing while she takes a shower, except when she plays it back, her voice was nowhere to be heard! What can be heard instead is…a deep, terrifying voice singing the same song that she was.
@indahsyafyra Aku traumaaa nak mandi dalam bilik air aku sendiri😰😰 Scaryyy!! Real dia bagi
Indah captioned the video with,
“Aku traumaaa nak mandi dalam bilik air aku sendiri ?? Scaryyy!! Real dia bagi
(I’m traumatised to shower in my own bathroom ?? So scary! This no joke)”
The video began with a snippet of the original song, with the words “This is why our elders told us not to sing in the shower!!!!!” She explains that,
“I get off work at 8 [pm] and arrive home at 9 [pm] or so. As soon as I get home, I jump straight into the shower.
“One thing I like to do when I shower is sing. ?
“I get in the bathroom and hit record, so I can listen to myself later on because don’t we sound way better in the bathroom? ?”
But upon playback as shown in the video, the sound of the water from the shower can be heard but not Indah’s. The voice sounds deep and almost in slow motion. The user explains in a series of on-screen text that,
“Yes, this is the song that I sang, but I didn’t sing it in slow-mo like this!!!”
She continued,
“At first I thought maybe I did accidentally record in slow-mo, but it doesn’t make sense, does it? Because the sound of the water sounds the same ??”
“My voice can’t be heard!” she wrote.
She vowed never to sing in the bathroom again, and swears that the video was not edited.
A TikTok user shared a common experience, citing,
“Back when I was in boarding school doing my diploma, I would wash my clothes (in the bathroom) while singing. One night as I was singing, something else joined me.”
Another user said,
“It’s not encouraged to sit too long in the bathroom, let alone sing. Now you have ‘someone’ joining you ?”
Warn your roommates that you’ll be showering with the door open from now on.
