This Interesting New Dating App Feature Aims To Stop Creepy Messages But… Will It Work?

“Are You Sure?”

These are the three words that a dating app is introducing to try to change the online dating game.

With the pandemic making it difficult for people to meet their loved ones, much less The One, dating apps have been taking up more user screentime than usual.

Tinder is hoping to create a safer, more comfortable experience for its users by using artificial intelligence (AI) to identify and flag harmful or offensive messages AS THEY ARE BEING DRAFTED. That’s right! Before a user is able to click send, Tinder will be their wingman/wingwoman and ask:

 “Are You Sure?”

What sorts of messages, you may wonder? According to the dating app, if Tinder’s AI deems your message “inappropriate” or potentially abusive”, you’ll receive a pop-up message that will allow you to reevaluate your choices.

It’s the dating apps version of “two-factor authentication” for messages as they already have the: “Does This Bother You?” pop up that allows receivers to report a message that they deem inappropriate. The latest feature “proactively intervenes and warns the sender of a message before it is sent.” In a press release for the new feature, Tinder explains:

“AYS uses AI to detect harmful language and proactively intervenes to warn the sender their message may be offensive, asking them to pause before hitting send. The AI was built based on what members have reported in the past, and it will continue to evolve and improve over time.”

Tinder also claimed that their new “AYS” feature had shown the ability to reduce inappropriate language in messages by more than 10% during testing. According to the company, those that were shown the prompt were less likely to be reported by other users over the next month. After all, Tinder’s rules mean that bad behaviour – not limited to harassment, hate speech and threats – could mean you’re off the platform for good.

The “AYS” feature is already available in English and Japanese, and in Japan, the US, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, UK, and Ireland. The company hopes to roll it out to other markets in the coming months. This is just one of the new steps that dating sites are actively implementing, with Bumble having rolled out a policy that aims to curb body-shaming on its platform.

We stan a platform that is actively doing what they can to promote a safe, all-encompassing community! Do you think this measure will help reduce the number of creepy messages you receive? Or is this a “one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind” moment that will take a while before we see the benefits?

For now, we’re just going to have to self-regulate the platform by reporting creepy, inappropriate and harassment-like behaviour ( especially now that we know these reports will help reduce the number of similar messages in the future!)
