
Reports confirm that Malaysia recorded its first custodial death of 2023 yesterday (January 11) in Johor Bahru. The deceased had been receiving care at Larkin health clinic while under the Johor Baru South district police’s custody.
The 47-year-old expressed complaints of feeling sick around 6:20 a.m. and vomited while he awaited being charged in court with a drug offence.

Johor Baru South police chief, Assistant Commissioner Raub Selamat, confirmed that the federal police will be looking into the matter. Meanwhile, the case has been classified under sudden death.
“At 7.45 a.m., the detainee was sent to the Larkin health centre to receive treatment. At 8.30 a.m., the attending medical officer declared him dead. The integrity and compliance standards section of Bukit Aman will be investigating the matter,” said Raub last night.
